This book is so different from most books I read as a kid. It’s a historical novel about a 13 year old girl who was the only girl on a ship back in 1832. While on the ship, she is accused of murder and there is a mutiny. I remember learning about what a mutiny was from reading this book. It was published originally in 1990, and was awarded the Newbery Honor in 1991.
I think it appealed to me because she was a girl thrown into this adventure and I could really relate to her. The whole story is written like a diary so we get to read about her inner thoughts and feelings. As a teenager who thinks that “no one understands me” it is reassuring to find a fictional character to relate to, and one you might even call a “tomboy.” After completing the book, I imagined someday living on a ship!
